I'm late to this post, but I couldn't agree more with you both. Innovation starts with the kiddos and trickles its way up to teachers and leaders. In my senior year of high school, our English teacher let us take the reins on what direction we wanted our end-of-semester project to go in when we read
Frankenstein. We ultimately decided to have a role-playing court case: Victor Frankenstein vs. the Monster, and each student played a role in the court case. This innovative idea really helped us internalize what was happening in the story and helped us identify with morality and ethical dilemmas. I'll always appreciate that experience with my classmates as it was our last work assignment as a collective group.

Though I am currently not at a school, in my past teaching experiences I have found that the kids are the best creators of innovation. They are open-minded, eager to have fun and don't even know that "boxes" exist yet! Some of the best projects and teaching that I've had was actually inspired by students and was more student-led than teacher led. Give them the "Okay" and they will run with it and the end results are usually amazing!

| Educational Innovation: What It Means to Think Like There Is No Box - Building Hope | Innovation is the lifeblood of charter schools. To succeed, it takes imagination, perseverance, and insight. Picking out the best innovators is almost as big of a challenge. Just ask Amy Ruck-Kagan, who helped judge those entries for the Building Hope Impact and Summit Awards. "Oh, my God," she said. | View this on Building Hope > |
